With a childhood surrounded by music, it was only natural for him to pursue it. He began writing music at fifteen and at age nineteen produced his first album Collective Thoughtsfor Manwell of Group 1 Crew. After years of working behind the scenes for artists such as Lecrae, Group 1 Crew and Angie Stone, this writer, producer, and mix engineer experienced enough to venture out into the industry as an artist. Through various experiments and much time, he has created a refreshing experience for your ears coupled with a lyrical journey through his life. Benjah's unique sound, dubbed Island Soul Rock, comes from diverse influences including Lauryn Hill, the Marley's, Musiq Soulchild, and John Mayer.
In 2008 he released Muddy Water Clear which transitioned into a pre-release to his freshman album Filtered. He felt the need to tighten and "filter" the content and music. BenJah naturally loves the chemistry he has experienced through years of collaborating with various artists as a producer and engineer. This prompted him to bring together his friends to create more unique artistic synergy. The features on Filtered include Lecrae, Sho Baraka, Paul Wright, Brenden "Proclaim" McPeek of Shachah. Benjah also featured two up and coming artists Dillavou and Soye, who he plans to work with in the future to create more Island Soul for your ears.
